«Street Art - The readable city»
Opening
10.2.2006, 7pm
Freiraum, Quartier 21
Museumsquartier Vienna
Street Art can be understood like a language. The exhibition "Street Art - The Readable City" offers "reading" instructions to understand its symbolism. After viewing, visitors will be able to comprehend the dynamic readability of Street Art. They will be prepared for new visual challenges in every day life and will develop a new understanding of the public space.
Installation:
The core of the exhibition is the main installation in the middle of the room
which imitates the spot (imitates the way street art is applied, tagged in public
space) of Street Art in public space. Objects made and sent in by Street Art
artists are displayed (shown). These objects which are disassociated from its
context are then displayed a second time at the wall alongside and are complemented
by short commentaries of the artists and a photo of a spot of the object in
real space.
Studio:
Behind the main installation, a replica of the studio of a Street Art artist
provides insight into the production techniques and materials used for Street
Art.
Documentation:
The displayed photos in the documentary area clarify the significance of the
atmosphere and surroundings used for Street Art. Projected onto the wall is
a street map of the immediate vicinity of the exhibition. Locations are marked
where one can find and experience Street Art in close proximity to the exhibition.
This will inspire visitors to have an expectation and open eye for Street Art
in nearby public spaces even after leaving the exhibition.
